After NBC ended the immensely popular The Golden Girls following Bea Arthur's decision to leave the series, CBS continued the story with the spin-off Golden Palace. The new series reunited Rose Nylund (Betty White), Blanche Devereaux (Rue McClanahan), and Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty) as the owners of the aging 42-room Golden Palace Hotel in Miami's South Beach.

Following Dorothy Zbornak's (Bea Arthur) marriage to Blanche's uncle Lucas Hollingsworth, Blanche sold the famous Miami house the women had shared. Rose, Blanche, and Sophia then invested in a rundown Art Deco hotel, hoping to turn it into a successful business despite having little experience in the hospitality industry.

Joining the three women were several new regular cast members, including Roland Wilson (Don Cheadle), the hotel's hardworking manager and desk clerk; Chuy Castillos (Cheech Marin), the wisecracking chef; and Oliver Webb (Billy L. Sullivan), a resourceful young boy who lived at the hotel and helped out with odd jobs.

Although Golden Palace retained the warmth and humor that made The Golden Girls a television classic, the absence of Bea Arthur's sharp-tongued Dorothy changed the dynamic of the ensemble. Despite strong performances from its talented cast and occasional guest appearances by Bea Arthur, the series struggled to match the ratings and popularity of its predecessor. CBS cancelled Golden Palace after a single 24-episode season, making it a short-lived but memorable continuation of one of television's most beloved sitcoms.
