Created by Susan Harris as a spin-off of the smash hit The Golden Girls, Empty Nest stars Richard Mulligan in his Emmy Award-winning role as widowed pediatrician Dr. Harry Weston. Looking forward to a quieter life after the loss of his wife, Harry soon discovers those plans are short-lived when two of his three adult daughters—Barbara (Kristy McNichol) and Carol (Dinah Manoff)—move back into the family home in Miami.

Life becomes even more chaotic thanks to Harry's wisecracking next-door neighbor Charley Dietz (David Leisure), a skirt-chasing cruise ship employee whose constant freeloading and playful battles with Carol provide some of the series' biggest laughs. Keeping Harry on his toes at work is his outspoken receptionist LaVerne Todd (Park Overall), whose sharp wit and unmistakable Arkansas drawl make her one of television's most memorable supporting characters.

Despite juggling family responsibilities, an unpredictable medical practice, and an often complicated personal life, Harry always finds comfort in his daily beach jogs with his lovable dog Dreyfuss, the gentle Saint Bernard/Golden Retriever mix who quickly became a fan favorite.

Following Kristy McNichol's departure during the 1992 season, Lisa Rieffel joined the cast as Harry's previously unseen third daughter, Emily Weston, who returns home after college. Although Emily remained for only one season, McNichol returned to the series for the beloved 1995 series finale.

Season five introduces Patrick Arcola (Paul Provenza), Carol's eccentric artist boyfriend, whose relationship eventually leads to an unexpected pregnancy and the birth of Carol's son, Scotty. In season six, Harry and LaVerne become involved with a neighborhood community clinic run by Dr. Maxine Douglas (Marsha Warfield), adding fresh storylines while maintaining the show's trademark warmth and humor.
