Before the bell rang and long after the students cleared the halls, the real lessons were happening behind closed doors in the faculty lounge…

Teachers Only was a short-lived but sharply observed NBC comedy that focused not on the students of Millard Fillmore High School, but on the teachers who shaped them. Set primarily in the faculty lunchroom and staff lounge — strictly off-limits to students — the series explored the professional triumphs and personal missteps of the men and women responsible for educating the next generation.

At the heart of the show was Diana Swanson (Lynn Redgrave), a principled and passionate English teacher whose demanding curriculum earned both respect and affection from her students. Opposite her was Ben Cooper (Norman Fell), the gruff yet big-hearted principal whose long years of juggling parents, teachers, and bureaucracy had left him with a stubborn ulcer and a permanently furrowed brow.

Rounding out the original cast were fellow teachers Michael (Adam Arkin) and Gwen (Van Nessa Clarke), Assistant Principal Mr. Brody (Norman Bartold), and the ever-observant janitor Mr. Pafko (Richard Karron), who often witnessed more school drama than anyone else.

When the series returned in spring 1983 after an initial cancellation, significant changes were made. Though still set in Los Angeles, the school was now Woodrow Wilson High — a shift never explained on-air. Only Diana (now serving as guidance counselor) and Ben returned. Joining them were new faculty members Sam Keating (Teresa Ganzel), Barney Betelman (Joel Brooks), Michael Horne (Tim Reid), gym teacher and coach Spud Le Boone (Steve Ryan), and Ben’s capable secretary Shari (Jean Smart).

Despite the infusion of fresh faces and storylines, ratings remained low, and the series was ultimately canceled for good.

Produced by Carson Productions, the company founded by Johnny Carson, Teachers Only remains an interesting early-1980s entry in the tradition of workplace ensemble comedies — trading classroom chaos for the candid conversations, camaraderie, and conflicts that unfolded where students were never allowed to go.
