Charming and single Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc) embarks on his own and moves from New York City to Hollywood, hoping to truly make it as an actor. Joey says good-bye to a time when his friends were his family and welcomes the chance to turn his family into his friends in this spin-off from the popular Friends series.

After accidentally ending up in Dallas instead of taking a connecting flight to California, Joey finally arrives in Los Angeles and reunites with his high-strung older sister Gina (Drea de Matteo), a strong and sexy hairdresser.

While Gina shows Joey the apartment she arranged for him, her genius 20-year-old son, graduate student Michael (Paulo Costanzo), who literally is a rocket scientist, arrives and soon becomes Joey's roommate. Although Joey lacks book smarts, he more than compensates with his people skills, making him the best new friend his nephew could ask for.

Joey’s next door neighbor, landlord and friend is Alexis “Alex” Garrett (Andrea Andreas). She is an educated, but slightly ditzy, blonde lawyer who graduated from Pepperdine University. Her husband is a professional orchestra musician and is away from home most of the time, and she confides her problems with her marriage in Joey. At the end of season one, she and Joey become romantically involved during her separation from her husband.

Assisted by his agent Roberta "Bobbie" Morganstern (Jennifer Coolidge), Joey sets his sites on stardom, unfazed by the speedbumps he hits along the way. Bobbie is reportedly the twelfth most powerful woman in Hollywood. She has an enormous crush on Joey's nephew, Michael and often entertains herself by making her office assistant do funny tricks or shocking herself with a stun-gun. She is brash, forward, aggressive, highly entertaining, and slightly ditzy, laughing at everything and at anyone's expense, including her client Joey's. She was once sued by singer Phil Collins.

In season two Joey became friends with Zach Miller (Miguel A. Núñez Jr.) a fellow actor and amateur play director.

Guest stars included Simon Helberg, Bob Saget Lucy Liu, Jayma Mays, Brent Spiner, Jay Leno, Antonio Sabato, Jr., Julia Duffy, Carmen Electra, John Larroquette, Dan Cortese and James Lipton.
