David Janssen stars as Harry Orwell, a tough, unconventional private investigator with a laid-back attitude and a strong sense of justice in this acclaimed 1970s television detective series.

A former Marine and Los Angeles police officer, Harry was forced into early retirement after taking a bullet in the back that left the bullet permanently lodged dangerously close to his spine. Living in a quirky beachfront cottage near San Diego, Harry supplements his disability pension by taking on private-investigation cases—usually the kind that are interesting enough to pull him away from restoring his beloved sailboat, The Answer.

Harry is hardly the typical television private eye. He often gets around by public bus because his beloved MG sports car seems to spend more time being repaired than on the road. His easygoing, sometimes eccentric personality hides a sharp investigative mind and a willingness to take on cases that other detectives might avoid.

During the San Diego years, Harry's primary police contact is his friend and sometime adversary, Lt. Manny Quinlan, played by Henry Darrow. Following Quinlan's death in a dramatic crossover episode, Harry relocates his private-investigation operation to Santa Monica, where he develops a new working relationship—and frequent clashes—with the irascible Lt. Trench, played by Anthony Zerbe.

Harry also receives occasional assistance from a colorful collection of characters, including amateur criminologist Lester Hodges, Sgt. Roberts, Sgt. Frank Cole, Dr. Fong, and Harry's perpetually frustrated automobile mechanic, Spencer Johnson.

Adding another dimension to Harry's life is his beautiful next-door neighbor, Sue Ingram, portrayed by Farrah Fawcett-Majors in one of her earliest television roles. Sue is sometimes Harry's confidante and sometimes his romantic interest, making her one of the most memorable recurring characters in the series.

Before the weekly series premiered, Janssen first introduced Harry Orwell in two television pilot films: Such Dust as Dreams Are Made On, which aired March 11, 1973, and Smile Jenny, You're Dead, broadcast February 3, 1974. The second pilot featured significant changes to the character and format that would lead to the regular series.

Harry O premiered on ABC on September 12, 1974, with Janssen delivering one of his most distinctive performances. Combining mystery, crime drama, dry humor, memorable characters and a relaxed Southern California atmosphere, the series offered a refreshingly different take on the private-eye genre.
