A landmark in television history, The Flip Wilson Show became the first successful network variety series hosted by an African American entertainer and one of the first television programs starring a Black performer in the title role to achieve enormous crossover success with mainstream audiences. During its first two seasons, it ranked as the second highest-rated television series in America, making Flip Wilson one of the biggest stars of the early 1970s.

Each hour combines hilarious comedy sketches, outstanding musical performances, celebrity interviews, and unforgettable guest appearances. The series also broke new ground by utilizing a unique "theatre-in-the-round" stage, with audiences surrounding the performers on all sides, creating an intimate and energetic atmosphere unlike any other variety show of its era.

Among Wilson's most beloved creations was Geraldine Jones, the outspoken, glamorous, and hilariously flirtatious woman whose legendary catchphrases—"What you see is what you get!" and "The Devil made me do it!"—became part of the American pop culture lexicon. Equally memorable was Reverend Leroy, the fast-talking minister of the Church of What's Happening Now!, whose questionable fundraising methods left even his congregation wondering where the money was going.
