PAUL LYNDE SHOW, THE - THE COLLECTION (ABC 1972-73) VERY RARE!!! Paul Lynde, John Calvin, Elizabeth Allenas, Jane Actman, Pamelyn Ferdin
The Paul Lynde Show remains one of the most sought-after television series among collectors today—ironically, for a sitcom that was one of the least successful network comedies of the 1970s. Although it survived only a single season, the series has developed a loyal cult following thanks to the enduring popularity and unmistakable comic talent of its star, Paul Lynde.
Created by legendary producer William Asher for ABC and Screen Gems in 1972, the series came about under unusual circumstances. Asher's long-running hit Bewitched was ending, but contractual obligations required one more season for the network. With Elizabeth Montgomery unwilling to continue the series as her marriage to Asher was coming to an end, The Paul Lynde Show was developed to fulfill that commitment. Lynde, who had become a fan favorite portraying Samantha's mischievous Uncle Arthur on Bewitched, finally received the opportunity to headline his own sitcom.
Lynde stars as Paul Simms, a conservative attorney whose orderly life is constantly thrown into chaos by his easygoing, perpetually unemployed son-in-law (John Calvin). The series also stars Elizabeth Allen as his wife Martha, Jane Actman and Pamelyn Ferdin as his daughters, and real-life husband-and-wife comedy legends Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara as Paul's delightfully eccentric parents.
Guest stars include Dick Van Patten, Charlotte Rae, Herb Voland, Mabel Albertson, James Gregory, Tom Bosley, Gordon Jump, Thelma Carpenter, Jodie Foster, Kenneth Mars, Arthur O'Connell, Ray Walston, David White, Anson Williams, Jo Anne Worley, Alan Hale Jr., Henry Jones, and Bernie Kopell.
Unfortunately, the series faced formidable competition, airing opposite NBC's Adam-12 and CBS's The Carol Burnett Show. Ratings were disappointing from the start, and ABC canceled the series after just 26 episodes. Despite its short run, Lynde earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Television Comedy Series, further cementing his status as one of television's most beloved comic performers.
Please Note: The Paul Lynde Show was originally filmed in color; however, this **6-disc collection is not the complete series, containing 23 of the original 26 episodes. The set includes a mixture of color and black-and-white episodes.
Our copy of The Paul Lynde Show was acquired from another collector and originates from vintage analog VHS recordings. As a result, picture and sound quality vary from episode to episode and should not be expected to match modern digital restorations or Rewatch Classic TV's usual standards. Nevertheless, we are pleased to offer this exceptionally rare collection because, to the best of our knowledge, it remains the only available release featuring episodes from this classic cult television series.
