Directed by Daniel Mann and adapted from Alan Paton's acclaimed novel Cry, the Beloved Country, this powerful musical drama tells the moving story of Reverend Stephen Kumalo (Brock Peters), a humble Zulu minister who travels from his rural village to Johannesburg in search of his long-missing son, Absalom (Clifton Davis).

Upon arriving in the city, Kumalo discovers that Absalom is a paroled ex-convict living in a shantytown with his pregnant girlfriend (Melba Moore). Hoping to build a better life, Absalom instead becomes entangled in a robbery that tragically ends with the death of a white anti-apartheid activist. Arrested, tried, and sentenced to death, Absalom's fate leaves his father heartbroken and struggling to reconcile his faith with overwhelming personal loss.
