Originally airing in first-run syndication from September 7, 1985 through March 26, 1988, What's Happening Now!! reunites viewers with Roger "Raj" Thomas (Ernest Thomas), now a struggling writer who purchases Rob's Place—renamed simply Rob's—and operates the restaurant alongside the sharp-tongued and hilarious Shirley Wilson (Shirley Hemphill). Helping keep Raj grounded is his wife Nadine Hudson Thomas (Anne-Marie Johnson), a compassionate social worker, as the couple settles into Raj's childhood home.

Raj's lifelong friends have grown up as well. Dwayne Nelson (Haywood Nelson) has become a successful computer programmer, while Rerun Stubbs (Fred Berry) tries his hand as a used-car salesman. Although they're now adults with careers and responsibilities, their talent for finding themselves in outrageous predicaments remains as strong as ever.

Fans will also enjoy the return of Danielle Spencer in guest appearances as Raj's sister Dee Thomas. The series also introduced audiences to a young Martin Lawrence in his first regular television role as Maurice Warfield, an energetic teenage busboy at Rob's. Along with his best friend Darryl (Ken Sagoes), Maurice provides a new generation of laughs that recalls the unforgettable chemistry of Raj, Dwayne, and Rerun.
