Short-lived but groundbreaking, The Robert Guillaume Show starred Emmy-winner Robert Guillaume (Soap, Benson) as Edward Sawyer, a divorced marriage counselor whose professional advice often outpaced his own ability to manage life at home.

Edward juggles fatherhood with two teenagers, contends with the well-meaning interference of his traditional, deeply paternal father (Hank Rolike), and navigates a budding interracial romance with his white secretary, Ann (Wendy Phillips), who is raising a daughter of her own. The series sought to explore racial and generational complexities within a modern American family—through both humor and heart.

According to Guillaume’s autobiography, the show was conceived as a thoughtful yet comedic examination of interracial relationships at a time when such portrayals were still rare on network television. However, he later maintained that ABC mishandled the series—airing episodes out of order and advancing a key romantic moment (a kiss between Edward and Ann) earlier than intended. The series was canceled shortly thereafter, making it one of television’s notable “what-might-have-been” projects.
