Phyllis was created by Ed Weinberger and Stan Daniels and became the second successful spin-off from the landmark sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show, following Rhoda. The series stars Cloris Leachman in her Emmy Award-winning role as the unforgettable Phyllis Lindstrom—Mary Richards' delightfully self-absorbed, outspoken, and endlessly entertaining former neighbor.

When the unexpected death of her husband, Lars, leaves her virtually penniless, Phyllis and her teenage daughter Bess (Lisa Gerritsen) leave Minneapolis behind for a fresh start in San Francisco. There they move in with Lars's eccentric mother Audrey Dexter (Jane Rose) and her patient husband, Judge Jonathan Dexter (Henry Jones). Forced into the workforce for the first time after years of privilege, Phyllis discovers that earning a living is far more challenging than she ever imagined.

During the first season, Phyllis takes a job at Erskine Photography, where she works alongside studio owner Julie Erskine. The role was originally played by Barbara Colby, whose promising career was tragically cut short when she was murdered after filming only three episodes. The character was subsequently recast with Liz Torres, while Richard Schaal delighted audiences as the lovable but bumbling photographer Leo Heatherton. Much of the comedy stems from Phyllis's hilarious attempts to adapt to the realities of everyday working life.

A memorable guest appearance by veteran actress Judith Lowry as Mother Dexter proved so popular that she was promoted to series regular before the end of the first season, adding another wonderfully eccentric personality to the growing household.

For its second season, the series was retooled as Phyllis leaves the photography studio to become an assistant to a San Francisco City Supervisor, introducing a colorful new cast of co-workers while retaining the sharp wit, heartfelt storytelling, and outstanding performances that made the series such a standout among 1970s television comedies.

This hard-to-find 6-DVD collection contains all 48 original episodes, beautifully preserving one of television's most beloved spin-offs.
