Phyllis was created by Ed Weinberger and Stan Daniels and stands as the second spin-off of The Mary Tyler Moore Show (following Rhoda). The series stars Cloris Leachman in her Emmy-winning role as Phyllis Lindstrom, formerly Mary Richards’ opinionated neighbor and college friend.

After the sudden death of her husband Lars leaves her nearly penniless, Phyllis relocates to San Francisco with her teenage daughter Bess (Lisa Gerritsen). They move in with Lars’s eccentric mother Audrey Dexter (Jane Rose) and her husband, the dignified but long-suffering Judge Jonathan Dexter (Henry Jones). Forced into the working world after years as the pampered wife of a wealthy dermatologist, Phyllis takes a job as an assistant in a photographic studio.

In the first season, Phyllis works at Erskine Photography, owned by Julie Erskine, originally played by Barbara Colby. Tragically, Colby was murdered after only three episodes had been filmed, and the role was subsequently assumed by Liz Torres. Also featured at the studio is Leo Heatherton (Richard Schaal), a kind-hearted but inept photographer. Much of the early humor comes from Phyllis’s awkward attempts to navigate employment after a lifetime of privilege.

Veteran actress Judith Lowry guest stars in the episode “Leaving Home” as Jonathan’s mother, Sally Dexter. Her performance was so well received that she became a regular by the end of the first season, with Mother Dexter joining the household.

The series was retooled for its second season. The photography studio storyline was dropped, explained by Julie Erskine’s sudden marriage and relocation, which leaves Phyllis unemployed once again. Phyllis is then hired as an assistant to a San Francisco City Supervisor, introducing new characters including her boss Dan Valenti (Carmine Caridi), inept office politician Leonard Marsh (John Lawlor), and Leonard’s secretary Harriet Hastings (Garn Stephens), who begins as Phyllis’s rival before becoming a close friend. Leachman, Gerritsen, Jones, Rose, and Lowry all remained with the series through its retooling.

This hard-to-find 6-DVD set includes all 48 episodes produced, making it an essential collection for fans of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Cloris Leachman, and classic 1970s television comedy.
