As Irish ward boss Matt Stanton (Robert Foxworth) tries to win the Brooklyn mayoralty from the ruthless Ned Quinn (George Rose).

Stanton's wife, Kathleen (Faye Dunaway), worries the opposition will discover she married her husband in a civil ceremony - and not in the Catholic Church.

But a bigger and more destructive skeleton hides in Stanton's closet in this sterling adaptation of William Alfred's play when the disgraced current mayor makes sure the candidate's wife learns about his affair with a just-deceased rich girl.

The film also stars Rue McClanahan, Kevin Conway, Margaret Linn, Philip Bosco and John Devlin.

Originally aired on October 18, 1971 as part of PBS's "Special of the Week" broadcast, this production, directed by Glenn Jordan, helped propel Dunaway's career to stardom.
