THE SHADY HILL KIDNAPPING (PBS 1/12/82) Celeste Holm/Polly Holliday

$ 12.95
- +

John Cheever's wry comedy of errors comes to the screen in this filmed presentation from the first installment from PBS' American Playhouse. The story is set in his mythical upper middle-class community of Shady Hill, presents a satirical commentary on suburban social climbing and bourgeois values.

The apparent kidnapping of the Woosters' grandson disrupts his family and the town, and sets off a series of ridiculous events including a fake ransom note, a fundraising campaign that culminates in an antic parade, and a SWAT operation conducted by overzealous agents. Interspersed through this tale are satirical "commercial spots" featuring Celeste Holm, who promotes the fictitious beauty product Elixircal.

George Grizzard, Polly Holliday, Katharine Balfour, Judith Ivey, Paul Dooley and Celeste Holm star. Directed by Paul Bogart.
