Refined, image-conscious Rochelle Dunphy (Melissa Gilbert) has enjoyed a life of luxury with her wealthy husband, Roger (Sam McMurray), while outspoken, blue-collar Lorraine Popowski (Rosie O'Donnell) has always struggled to make ends meet with her lovable but irresponsible husband, Artie (Rick Hall). Their worlds collide when both men are caught red-handed during a bank robbery and sentenced to eight years in the state penitentiary.

With nowhere else to turn, the sisters move in together, discovering that surviving life without their husbands—and with each other—is no easy task. Rochelle reluctantly enters the workforce after years as a pampered housewife, while Lorraine continues working at the discount retailer Bargain Circus, where her outspoken personality regularly lands her in hilarious situations. Their unconventional household quickly becomes the talk of the neighborhood, much to the dismay of their snobbish next-door neighbor Adrienne Stone (Miriam Flynn), who never misses an opportunity to remind them of their husbands' criminal past.

The series also stars Rusty Schwimmer as Gloria, Ellen Ratner as Sophie, Donald Gibb as Lorraine's rough-around-the-edges biker friend Scab, Sam McMurray as Roger Dunphy, and Rick Hall as Artie Popowski.
